American supergroup August Greene consists of rapper Common, composer, producer and jazz pianist Robert Glasper, and drummer and producer Karriem Riggins. The three first collaborated together on the track "Letter To The Free," which won them the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics and is the theme song of Ava DuVernay's Netflix documentary 13th. The trio performed together at Glasper's sixth annual Grammy Awards party, which took place at New York’s Highline Ballroom in January 2018, which served as their live debut. They released a debut single later in 2018 (a cover of Sounds of Blackness' "Optimistic" featuring Brandy), followed by their self-titled debut album, which was released on March 9, 2018 through Amazon Music.
