Led by, and essentially the core project of, Justin Vernon, Bon Iver first emerged on the indie folk scene in 2006. Initially very much a roots-focused musician, as time went on and Vernon found himself more and more famous, collaborating with the likes of Kanye West and other superstars, he found the attention didn’t appeal to him, and sunk into a depression. While travelling Europe in an attempt to alleviate the “horribleness,” he drafted out the first ideas for what would become “22, A Million.”
With the latest album, Bon Iver has gone even further away from his organic, emotional roots and run the risk of alienating his audience – but the gamble has paid off. The album has been widely and warmly received by fans, who are understanding of the singer’s wish to move out of the spotlight. With a score of 87 out of 100 on Metacritic, “22, A Million,” earned widespread critical acclaim, with Pretty Much Amazing going on to say; ”Not since Kid A has an album so superb pushed away and pulled closer its audience, simultaneously and with such aplomb.”
