First making their name in the late-1960s as a prog rock outfit, British hard rock pioneers Deep Purple are best known as being part of the "unholy trinity of British hard rock and heavy metal in the early to mid-Seventies" alongside fellow British bands Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. With its most commercially successful, "Mark II", line-up of Ian Gillan (vocals), Jon Lord (keyboards, backing vocals), Roger Glover (bass), Ian Paice (drums), and Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), who performed together from 1969 to 1973, the band established a heavier sound, drawing a huge international fan base. During that time, at a 1972 show at London's Rainbow Theatre, they made the Guinness Book of World Records as "the globe's loudest band". To date, they have sold over 100 million albums worldwide to date, including 8.5 million certified units in the US, and are widely considered to be one of rock music's most influential bands.
