American country folk singer-songwriter John Prine began his career in the early 1970s when he was “discovered” by fellow country folk singer Kris Kristofferson as a regular on the Chicago folk circuit. Signed to Atlantic Records, Prine released his self-titled debut album in 1971, launching the singles "Illegal Smile," "Sam Stone," "Angel from Montgomery" and "Paradise." The album was critically acclaimed, and cemented Prine's popularity as one of the voices of the '70s folk revival. Prine recorded six more studio albums throughout the 1970s and each was well received both critically and commercially. He continued to record and tour throughout the 1980s and founded his own records label, Oh Boy Records, in 1984. In 1991, Prine released the Grammy Award-winning album The Missing Years. His second Grammy Award came in 2005 with the release of his fifteenth studio album Fair & Square (2005), which won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album, and in 2015 he won the Grammy Awards Hall of Fame Award. Prine released The Tree of Forgiveness (his first album since Fair and Square to consist of his own original songs) in April 2018. It debuted at number five on the Billboard 200 – his highest ever ranking on the chart.
