Formed in 2000, Mastodon hail from Atlanta, Georgia, and are considered one of the dominant forces in the sludge metal genre. In a fortuitous turn of fate, the four band members, drummer Brann Dailor, guitarists Bret Hinds and Bill Kelliher, and bassist Troy Sanders, met at a High On Fire Concert, and got along so well that they decided to form a band. Their debut album, “Remission,” in 2002, received critical praise for its unique sound, with Pitchfork Media stating that the album is just technical enough to "keep the arrangements flavorful, but not so much as to overload the vintage guitar riffs with Dream Theater-like complexity. And then they counterbalance it with some nice, old-fashioned, Sabbath-style metal attitude."

This album was their only non-concept album for a long time following that; their second release, “Leviathan,” released two years later, centered around the “Moby Dick” novel by Herman Melville, entering the band into the genre of progressive rock, where they would stay for the duration of their career. The album was well-received by critics, but it was their third, “Blood Mountain,” that blasted them to universal commercial and critical stardom, the success of which they’ve enjoyed ever since.
