Awkward Black Girl became the inspiration behind Insecure, a TV series aired on HBO, also created by Rae.
Rae’s work with Insecure earned her numerous awards and nominations, the most prominent being nominations from the Primetime Emmy Awards and Golden Globe Awards. In 2017, Insecure was listed as one of the Top 10 Television Programs of the Year by the American Film Institute. Rae also won Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series category from the Black Reel Awards two consecutive times. In 2019, Rae won a Webby Award for Video Person of the Year.
Aside from her work in films and TV series, Rae has used her platform as a voice against police brutality on black people in America. She is also an advocate for women’s rights and civil rights. She made it a point to highlight black businesses in Insecure and used only black content creators for Awkward Black Girl.
