Their sophomore effort, Ágætis byrjun, topped the Icelandic charts and entered the charts in several other European countries, including the U.K. The album won several awards and was later certified platinum in Iceland and gold in the U.K.
In 2002, Sigur Ros made their breakthrough in the U.S. with their third album (). The record, which is called the Bracket Album, entered the Billboard 200, landing at a moderate number 51. The album was sung in a totally gibberish language called “Hopelandic.” Besides performing well in the U.S., the album also entered the charts in 14 other countries. Sigur Ros continued to top the chart in Iceland with their subsequent releases. In 2012, they dropped their highest-charting effort on the Billboard 200 with Valtari.
