The Story of Some Like It Hot

The show goes back to in the early 1930s just prior to the end of the Prohibition era. Two male jazz musicians, Joe and Jerry, see a mobster commit a crime at the Speakeasy where they’re working. Rather than have the mobster to make them a target, the musicians go on the run.

They put on women’s clothing and join a touring all-female swing big band. While touring, the two become infatuated with the band’s singer, Sugar Kane. They must keep their real identities concealed, but they both hope to find romance Sugar Kane.

Whilst touring, relationships form that could serve to expose Joe and Jerry as men. The mob and the FBI get involved, recognizing Jerry and Joe from their tap-dancing routines. Which further complicating the groups movement to performances and its ability to make agreements with new investors.

Jerry, who now must pass off as Daphne, falls falls for an investor, leading to a planned wedding. Eventually, everyones real identity becomes known, but that doesn't affect their feelings for each other. As Prohibition expires, the characters are able to move on with their new lives.

Show origins

This beloved musical comedy was written in 2022 with Marc Shaiman’s music and lyrics, Scott Wittman’s lyrics, and Matthew López and Amber Ruffin’s book. It earned 13 nominations for the 76th Tony Awards. It also won Best Costumes and Best Choreography. Ensuring you will enjoy the visual portions of the show as much as the emotional music and lyrics. It features exquisite tap-dancing numbers, too.

This musical follows the entrancing story told in the 1959 movie. The film starred the famous Marilyn Monroe, making it incredibly popular at the time and still to this day. The new musical retells this beloved story from the movie with a twist while maintaining the vintage comedy and musical styles from the movie.

History

Some Like It Hot had its opening night at the Shubert Theater on Broadway in late 2022. Its last performance was near the end of 2023. The shows North American tour started in 2024 and continues today. You now can attend the show in your acclaimed theater in Seattle.
