Occurring specifically during the time span in the middle of the Rebellion of 1832 in Paris, France, the musical is the story of Jean Valjean, a resident of France who was convicted for 19 years as a consequence of a small act of theft for his nephew. Despite nearing the end of his sentence, he escapes and seeks redemption as an honest man; Valjean then adopts a brand new name as Monsieur Madeleine, while still constantly being pursued by his nemesis, Javert, an officer who has known Valjean since his time in the chain gang and determined to catch and bring Valjean face the consequences of his previous escape.
Transpiring over a duration of almost two decades covered by its two acts, Valjean becomes involved through fated encounters with a few main characters throughout Les Mis – Fantine is one of Monsieur Madeleine’s factory laborers who mothers an illegitimate baby; Cosette is the adoptive baby of Madeleine, who is in fact Fantine’s baby; Marius, a young local on the side of the rebellion and the love interest of Cosette. Other characters shown in Les Misérables consist of the Thénardiers, greedy innkeepers who pay no heed to their daughter and are consumed with making profit by all means; Eponine, their child, who harbors a secret love for for Marius; and comrades of the insurgency specifically Gavroche, a naive but cunning orphan, and the revolt’s leader, Enjolras.
This vibrant ensemble of characters who meet by fate and their unique hardships are adapted skillfully on live stage, not just with its 1800s French-based clothing and stage creations, but distinctly with Les Misérables being sung-through fully from the first to last line of the play. With famous songs like “I Dreamed a Dream” and “One Day More” as anthems of its astounding musical score, the musical is able to portray the emotion, passion, and tragedy hidden deep in each character that plays out beautifully in each performance.
