Hadestown is Anaïs Mitchell’s contemporary mythology adaptation of Orpheus and Eurydice’s love story. After penning the original scores and scripts in 2010, she turned to accoladed stage director Rachel Chavkin for assistance in 2012. Together, the pair polished the play for public, off-Broadway showings that began in 2016. Hadestown would move up from its humble beginnings to a coveted place on Broadway and other well-known stages in London and Canada, making it a world-wide success.
Welcome to the Underworld, where Hades runs a productive but stringent factory called Hadestown. The exhausted workers perform their endless duties daily in hopes they’ll eventually earn their autonomy. Meanwhile, Orpheus and Eurydice delight in a blossoming romance above ground, despite the challenges of winter’s famine.
Once Hades forces his wife Persephone to return to Hadestown, an early winter escalates above-ground famishment. Eurydice, affected by insatiable yearnings and influenced by the enticing promises of the Fates, lusts after the salvation Hadestown promises. She eventually travels to the underground industrial complex and sells her birthright in exchange for stability.
Her contract entangles her, and it’s up to Orpheus to rescue his bride-to-be. But an unswaying Hades, pressured by his disquieted workforce, stands firm in the contractual agreement. Can Orpheus free his one true love with Persephone’s help? Or will Hades bind Eurydice to do his bidding for all time?
In 2019, the musical earned 14 nominations and eight awards at the 73rd Tony Awards. Hadestown would also claim a 2020 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater. Its lofty achievements and wall-to-wall audiences demonstrate the play’s kinship with a present era while combining classical elements from the past.
The Tony-winning Broadway show features two acts with more than 20 original songs performed by a exemplary cast. Paramount Theatre will ensure your comfort throughout the 2h 30m performance with an intermission midway through the show, comfortable seating, and refreshments available for purchase.
