GISELLE: A MASTERPIECE

It’s undeniable: Giselle is a masterwork among standard ballet repertoire. Based on a prose passage about the legendary Wilis in De l’Allemagne by Heinrich Heine and a poem by Victor Hugo, Fantômes, the haunting libretto of Giselle, as written by Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges, and Théophile Gautier, delves into the tale of a young peasant girl who falls in love with Albrecht, a nobleman disguised as a commoner. When his betrayal comes to light, Giselle dies of heartbreak, and is summoned from the grave by the vengeful, cruel sisterhood of the Wilis - the ghosts of unmarried women who died after the betrayal of their lovers. In the light of the moon, the Wilis settle the score with the men by dancing them to death. 

Giselle is truly one of those ballets every theatregoer should see at least once in their life. It is a masterpiece with a global reputation of stunning choreography and beautiful music as composed by French maestro Adolphe Adam; it’s an exceptional theatre-piece that can enchant, rivet, and captivate any audience at the blink of an eye; and it’s synonymous with ballet culture around the world - as it has been since its premiere in 1841.
