Synopsis

Set in the diverse and gritty streets of Manhattan's Hell's Kitchen neighborhood, the story follows 17-year-old Ali, a bold teen’s quest for identity amid her overprotective single mother’s watchful eye. Follow Ali as she rebels and discovers her musical talent through piano lessons with her wise mentor, Miss Liza Jane, and sparks a love story with street drummer Knuck. Tensions rise with personal conflicts involving her absentee father, Davis. Through triumphs and struggles, Ali learns to embrace her identity, her origins, and the neighborhood that shapes her. This universal and heartfelt coming-of-age journey is packed with defiance, connection, and music.

Hell's Kitchen began development in 2011, inspired by Alicia Keys' life story. It premiered Off-Broadway at The Public Theater in 2023 to widespread praise, extending its run before moving to Broadway in 2024, with previews starting March 28 and an official opening on April 20. The show earned 13 Tony Award recognitions in 2024, claiming Best Actress in a Leading Role for Maleah Joi Moon and Best Featured Actress for Kecia Lewis. In 2025, it secured the Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album.
