In 1980, history was being made when Jean-Marc Natel, Claude-Michel Schönberg, and Alain Boubil prepared the initial stage screenplay for the stage adaptation, Les Misérables (initially in the French language). Created from Victor Hugo’s original novel of the same name, Les Misérables was adapted into a musical performed as a show only sung from start to finish, which was a unique approach to stagecraft in that decade.

After a limited season performed in French in Paris, there was evidently great clamor to make an English version, and when Cameron Macikintosh listened to the score, he instantly fell in love and announced he was going to produce an English adaptation in collaboration with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Herbert Kretzmer, who wrote the translated songs. The English production of Les Misérables at first debuted with a two-month duration at the Barbican Centre, but as a result of its impressive success and positive reviews from critics, the musical quickly moved to West End’s Palace Theatre in just two months, a significantly more superior venue, and was performed for 19 years. The musical then relocated once again to another location, the Queen’s Theatre (which one day refurbished and renamed to The Sondheim Theatre in roughly half a decade ago), and carries on with its shows up until present day. If you include all its productions since its creation in 1980, Les Misérables is statistically the longest-running stage play of all time.
