The tale of The Lion King starts in a fictional region of the African savanna; living in The Pride Lands, the little Prince Simba is fated to take over after his father, before disloyalty is revealed because of the work of his dishonorable uncle Scar and his impulse to overthrow Simba's father, Mufasa, and become ruler himself. The first part's sequence of occurrences leads to Simba's exile from his home and the account of his consequent homecoming to retake his throne and his place as King.
The musical, since its inception, had to maintain accuracy using real-life sources from real African civilization and history given the show's setting. The narrative itself is actually founded on historical African leaders and actual events – Simba being the animal counterpart of Sundiata Mansa, the leader of the Malian Empire who was aptly referred to The Lion of Mali.
Julie Taymor, the first female director in Broadway history to earn a Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical, completed in-depth research on African and East Asian history, specifically with costume design, which resulted in a faultless staging of the musical. The outfits alone are perfect representations of a few indigenous tribes in Africa, a portrayal of which is Simba’s costume in the musical which is actually copied from Kenyan Maasi warriors' outfits. Just like the late 1994 film, the iconic musical score created by Elton John and Tim Rice stays respectful to its African heritage, with the stage adaptation even adding songs with lyrics that are performed either in part or fully in African dialects such as Swahili and Zulu. Moreover, the African inspiration is also clearly seen in choreography, with several of the performances presenting the seamlessness of Bali-inspired choreography.
The regalia, song composition, and stellar performances all blend together so well to make up an spectacular musical.
