The Lion King at Paramount Theatre Seattle

The saga of Disney’s The Lion King is set in motion in a fictional region of the African savanna; living in The Pride Lands, the little Prince Simba is destined to succeed as King, before disloyalty is revealed because of the deeds of his dishonorable uncle Scar and his impulse to rule the Pride Lands and become the ruling monarch himself. The first part's sequence of occurrences leads to the little lion's exile from his rightful place and the story of his consequent homecoming to overthrow his uncle Scar and save his people.

The Lion King, since its creation, had to develop extensive research on real African society and history given the play's content. The plot itself is actually taken from previously existing African warriors and actual events – Simba as an example is the animal equivalent of Sundiata Mansa, the founder of the Imperial Mali who was appropriately named The Lion of Mali.

Julie Taymor, the first female director in Broadway history to gain a Tony for Best Direction of a Musical, completed in-depth research on African and East Asian history, especially costume design, which resulted in a precise staging of the show. The outfits when seen are perfect portrayals of several indigenous groups in Africa, an example of which is Simba’s costume in the show which is actually copied from Kenyan Maasi warriors' outfits. Just like the late 1994 film, the remarkable musical score penned by Elton John and Tim Rice stays respectful to its African heritage, with the musical even putting in compositions with lyrics that are performed either partially or completely in African tongue such as Swahili and Zulu. Additionally, the African inspiration is also clearly seen in choreography, with several of the performances showing off the seamlessness of Bali-inspired choreography.

The 3D puppetry, music, and stellar performances all blend together so well to carry out an impressive musical.
