Composer Charlie Smalls and playwright William F. Brown’s Afro-American adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s legendary ‘The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz’ quickly catapulted to the top of theatre-favorites - a stage sensation that redefined the term ‘showstopper’. THE WIZ exploded onto the musical scene in a puff of smoke in 1974 in Baltimore, after which it moved to the Majestic Theatre on Broadway where it ran for four years of sold-out performances. THE WIZ brought down the house and shook up the critics, earning no less than seven Tony Awards, five Drama Desk Awards, and two Theatre World Awards.
