Synopsis

Set from 1976 until 1977, Stereophonic follows a fictional British-American rock band on the brink of stardom as they record a new album. As tensions run high with romance, drugs, and clashing personalities, the recording process takes much longer than expected. The big question is… Can they finish the album before the band falls apart? Will Butler’s original songs bring the story to life! The show includes a show-stopping setlist, including “Seven Roads,” “Bright v1,” “Masquerade,” “Bright (Fast),” “Drive,” “Champagne,” “East of Eden,” “Domino,” “It’s made of teak,” “In Your Arms,” “BVs,” “Exorcist II,” “Campfire Masquerade,” and “Bright (Take 22).” Get ready to be transported into the groovy seventies with this stellar story and awesome tracks!

Creative Team

Stereophonic is spearheaded by the talented director Daniel Aukin. The creative team also includes David Zinn (scenic design), Enver Chakartash (costumes), Jiyoun Chang (lighting), Ryan Rumery (sound design), Justin Craig (music direction), Gigi Buffington (voice, text, and dialect coach), as well as Robert Pickens and Katie Gell (hair and wig design). The producers include Sue Wagner, John Johnson, Seaview, Sonia Friedman Productions, Linden Productions, and Ashley Melone & Nick Mills.

The cast features Zachary Hart as Reg, Lucy Karczewski as Diana, Jack Riddiford as Peter, Nia Towle as Holly, Chris Stack as Simon, Andrew R. Butler as Charlie, and Eli Gelb as Grover.

“The show is about a rock band in 1976, who have been on tour since the release of their first album, are extremely tired, and are thrown into the studio to record a second album, which is not yet written,” says Zachary Hart, who plays Reg, the bassist, “We follow the writing and the recording of that second album, and the audience is a fly on the wall, witnessing seven creative people just smashing off each other.”

History and Awards

Stereophonic first opened Off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizons in New York in October 2023. It ran there until December and received awesome reviews. The show then transferred to Broadway at the John Golden Theatre, with previews starting in April 2024 and officially opening later that month. The show ran through January 2025 and became a major hit, earning a record number of Tony Award nominations. In May 2025, the play opened in London’s West End at the Duke of York’s Theatre. From October 2025, Stereophonic kickstarted a U.S. national tour, starting in Seattle at the esteemed Paramount Theatre. 

Stereophonic holds the most nominations for a play in the history of the Tony Awards, receiving a whopping 13 nods!! The show won an impressive five awards, including Best Play, Best Direction of a Play, Best Scenic Design, Best Sound Design, and Best Featured Actor in a Play (Will Brill). The Off-Broadway premiere also received as many as seven Drama Desk Awards.
